Dream Big

Antonio Aguilar

While we were in the El Pueblo Historic Monument area of Los Angeles recently, we noticed this dramatic equestrian statue. It depicts Antonio Aguilar, aka “the Mexican Cowboy”, who was a very famous movie star and singer in the mid-20th century. He came to Hollywood empty-handed and became part of the American Dream by proving that you can achieve success with a “work hard, dream big” philosophy.

On the Buses

Leyland OPS4 Tow Bus

Here are two of the buses that we saw at the Whiteman Park auto show in Perth on the weekend. The bus above is a 1949 Leyland Tiger OPS4 half-cab tow wagon. It started out as  passenger bus, and was cut down to a tow vehicle when newer buses were introduced.

The bus below is a 1954 Austin K8 which served as a school bus for the first 12 years of its life. It has been restored and fitted out as a motorhome.

Italian for Truck

1969 Fiat Truck

Yesterday we went along to the Auto One Classic Car Show at Whiteman Park in Perth. As well as the huge range of cars, we liked many of the retro trucks, buses and tractors on display. This 1969 Fiat 662 N2 truck especially caught our attention. It had a small Fiat pickup on the back. The barrel ostensibly contains grappa, Italian brandy. And the Italian word for truck is … camion.

Culture Capital

Marseille Bourse

There’s a lot happening in Marseille this year, since it has been designated as a European Capital of Culture¬†for 2013. We visited Marseille late last year and enjoyed exploring the city’s cultural history, which ranges from the original Greek town of Massalia to modern day street art. The impressive building above is the 19th century Bourse (stock exchange) and houses the Marseille Historical Museum, with an impressive display of model ships.

Car Culture

LA Car Show 1

California is famous for its car culture, so last weekend we grabbed the opportunity to attend the annual car/auto show at Johnny Carson Park in Burbank, Los Angeles. There were plenty of impressive classic cars and hotrods on display. But given our interest in vintage tractors, we especially liked this rig – a 1950 Chevrolet pickup towing a vintage Ford tractor, both painted in matching John Deere tractor colours.
