Another of our favourite scientists is Galileo Galilei. He was born in Pisa on 15 Sept 1564 and made some of his scientific discoveries at the town’s beautiful Romanesque cathedral. He famously dropped weights from the Leaning Tower to prove that objects of different weight fall at the same rate.
It is also reported that he learned about pendulums inside the cathedral. During a boring service, he noticed that a lamp was swinging and that the time for each swing was the same, no matter how far it swung. That discovery was the basis for the development of pendulum clocks. You can still “Galileo’s Lamp” in the cathedral.
