Tern, Tern, Tern

Rous Head Bird Sanctuary 1

Yesterday we cycled to Rous Head (aka the North Mole) in Fremantle and stopped to look at this flat-topped sand dune. It doesn’t look like much at a glance, but is actually very interesting.

It has been set up as a bird nesting sanctuary for Fairy Terns, as a joint project by Fremantle Ports, Birdlife Australia and the local Men’s Shed. Wooden birds like the one above were placed on the sand to encourage terns to come and nest there. But would terns fall for such a simple trick? Yes, they sure would.
