The Way We War

We went to see the exhibition “The Last Gentlemen of War” at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle. It’s about the battle between HMAS Sydney and the German Raider SMS Emden in 1914. The Sydney was escorting the ANZAC troops on their way to Gallipoli, and detoured to Cocos Island to sink the Emden.

The title of the exhibition refers to the fact that both captains were very fair and honourable in their approach to war. The German captain would capture Allied shipping, transfer all captured crew to one ship, send them off to the nearest port, and sink the rest of the ships. They just don’t fight wars like that any more.
