First President

George Washington Trafalgar Square

George Washington was elected by Congress to be the first president of the United States on 4 Feb 1789. Oddly, since he led the American forces in the American Revolutionary War, you can see the above statue of Washington in Trafalgar Square (below) in London. It stands right outside the National Gallery.
