Roman Time 7

St Peters Obelisk 1

Another interesting clock that we saw in Rome recently was the 25.5m tall obelisk that stands in front of St Peters Basilica. It dates from the 7th century BCE, when it was constructed in Egypt. It was brought to Rome by Caligula during the Roman Empire, and moved to its current location in the 16th century.

The shadow of the obelisk acts as a giant sundial, moving across the square and indicating key dates like the solstices and equinoxes, which are marked by circular plaques in the pavement.
