Industrial Past 7

First Blast Furnace 1

The blast furnace site in Lithgow, which we featured yesterday, wasn’t the location of Australia’s first blast furnace. You will find that in a park in Mittagong, New South Wales. A memorial cairn marks the spot, and a sign explains the significance of the site. The sign is itself a piece of industrial history – it is printed on the first cold rolled sheet of stainless steel produced in Australia, at Port Kembla.
