Last night we went to see the movie “Banksy Does New York”, which documents the elusive street artist’s residency in New York in October 2013. He produced a new artwork every day, in secret locations all around the city. His artworks are very valuable, but they are not legal/commissioned/authorized. So there were many contrasting responses to his project.
The mayor denounced his work as graffiti. The police failed to catch him, but did manage to arrest an artwork and some bystanders. Banksy fans rushed all over the city looking for the latest artwork. Local street artists tagged or defaced them. Building owners painted over them. Budding millionaires stole them.
Overall the movie was the funniest that we have seen for years, but did raise some serious questions about legal versus illegal art. Recommended for all art fans.
