Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean on this day in 1932. She flew out of Newfoundland on May 20 and landed in Ireland more than 14 hours later on May 21.

This monument to the famous aviatrix is in North Hollywood Park in Los Angeles. A plaque on the base reads, “In Memoriam Amelia Earhart Putnam  citizen of North Hollywood”.
