Roman Animals 6

This is one of our favourite animals in Rome, the elephant at the base of Bernini’s Elephant and Obelisk. It is in the square in front of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, just behind the Pantheon (as you can see below).

It was designed by Bernini in 1667. The ancient obelisk is from Egypt. The elephant is so whimsical that you can’t quite believe that Bernini had ever seen one.
