On this day in 1931, pilot Wiley Post and navigator Harold Gatty flew out of New York with the aim of setting a new record for circumnavigating the globe. The existing record was 21 days, set by the airship Graf Zeppelin. Post and Gatty returned to NY in triumph, after flying the 15,000 mile course in 8 days 15 hours and 51 minutes.

This memorial to Gatty is in his hometown of Campbell Town in Tasmania.
