How Time Flies


The California Science Center in Los Angeles has some striking reminders of how quickly aviation changed through the 20th century. As well as the awesome space shuttle Endeavour which was built in 1992, there is this little 2-seater monoplane. It is a 1928 Velie Monocoupe 70, built of wood and canvas, and powered by a 5-cylinder radial engine.


Just 26 years earlier, the Wright brothers were flying an unpowered glider, like the replica below, in preparation for their historic first powered flight in 1903.
