Hot Stuff

Here’s a mystery photo. What do you think it could be? Here are a few hints to get you started. We took the photo during our recent visit to Los Angeles. It continues one of the themes in our recent blog entries – art/murals or science/space. So what is it? Maybe an abstract mural or the lunar surface?

No, it is the scorched heat shield on Gemini 11, a 2-man space capsule that was launched in 1966. After 3 days in orbit, the shield was heated to 1900C as the capsule reentered the earth’s atmosphere.
