The Swan River looks rather rustic and undeveloped around Mosman Park, just a few kilometres upriver from Fremantle. This wooden jetty with a few anglers looks more remote than it really is.
But what’s that bird sitting behind the fishermen, waiting to nab some bait or a dropped fish? It’s a Nankeen Night Heron. Despite their common name, you can often see these small herons during daylight hours. They are not very common, but they certainly aren’t rare birds. We occasionally see them in Fremantle, beside the Swan River and in lakes around Perth.
