We saw this impressive Nankeen Night Heron a few days back. It looks like a rare bird that you would only find in tropical wetlands, but they are actually fairly common through most of mainland Australia – wherever there is water. This one was in Mabel Talbot Reserve, in Jolimont in the western suburbs of Perth.
Being waders, they are usually seen in the shallows hunting for something to eat. But this one was a bit camera shy and headed for the trees. Despite their name, you will often see them during the day.
