You never quite know what to expect at suburban lakes in Perth. A few days back we went for a walk around the small lake in Mabel Talbot Reserve in the suburb of Jolimont. The seasonal lake is gradually drying up, but still has quite a few ducks. However this time it had something a bit more unusual – about 20 Yellow-billed Spoonbills.
These large waders have a comical facial expression and spatulate (i.e. spoon shaped) bills. They wave their bills back and forth in the water to catch their food, which consists of aquatic insects and larvae.
