Here is another mystery object from the past that we saw in Albany recently. It is in the Albany Convict Gaol and consists of a metal frame covered in hessian, with a metal container on top. What do you think it is?
A few clues: It was used in the kitchen, and you will still find its descendants in modern kitchens. It has no motor, no power and no moving parts. It was invented in the West Australian goldfields.
And it is … a Coolgardie safe; a primitive refrigerator which uses the coolness of evaporating water to keep food cold (or maybe cool would be more accurate). Water is placed in the can on top and soaks down through the hessian.
