We were walking beside a lake a few days back and noticed a patch of buff/beige colour in the trees. On closer inspection, it turned out to be a Nankeen Night Heron (below).
These birds mainly hunt at night, but can be seen during the day as well. The ‘Nankeen’ in their name refers to the fabric Nankeen, which was made in Nanjing in China and has a yellow/buff/beige colour. These herons look very rare and tropical, but we occasionally see them beside lakes in Perth. This one was at Mabel Talbot Reserve in the inner Western suburb of Jolimont.
