Of Swineherds and Travellers

Here’s a question for you: What do swineherds and travellers have in common? And elderly people, mariners, travel hostesses and animals for that matter? The answer is connected to today’s date and to the building above. And also to lost objects and lost causes. Got it?

Yes, today is the feast day of St Anthony of Padua. He is the patron saint of all the things mentioned above, and many more as well. The huge building above is the Basilica of St Anthony in the Italian city of Padua. It was built after his death (on 13 June 1231) and doesn’t quite fit with his espousal of poverty.
