Mystery of the Rivers 2


There are numerous monuments along the River Murray, commemorating Charles Sturt’s exploration of the river system. The one above is in Loxton, South Australia.


And this monument is near Goolwa, at the mouth of the Murray (below) in South Australia. Sturt’s expedition reached this area in February 1830 and were disappointed to find that the river mouth is blocked by a sandbar – and even more disappointed at facing the arduous return journey back up the river.
