Today is the birthday of Blaise Pascal. The famous French scientist, mathematician, philosopher and writer was born on 19 June 1623. He made important contributions to our understanding of hydrostatics, pressure and the scientific method. The standard unit of pressure is named after him – the Pascal (often abbreviated to Pa).
We came across this statue of Pascal when we were in Paris last year. It stands in the base of the 16th century Tour Saint-Jacques, where he may have carried out some of his experiments on pressure.
