Rome or Bust

As well as being Independence Day in the US, today is also the birthday of the Italian general Giuseppe Garibaldi. He was born on 4 July 1807, fought for the independence and unity of Italy, and is now credited as being one of “the fathers of the fatherland”.

We saw this statue of him atop the Garibaldi Monument on the Janiculum hill in Rome last year. On the same hill you can see the Independence War Memorial (below) which honours Italian patriots. Both monuments have Garibaldi’s rallying cry of “Roma o Morte” – Rome or Death!
