We also liked these two interesting objects in the “Rough Medicine” exhibition at the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle. 

The one above is an octant, which is used to measure latitude. The other is a chronometer, a very accurate clock that is used to measure longitude. Both instruments were invented in the 18th century. Together they form a primitive GPS system.
