The central tower of St Mary in Castro (literally St Mary within the Castle) was covered in scaffolding when we visited Dover Castle last month. We weren’t too bothered, since there is something fascinating about scaffolding.

But in this case there was an added plus. Visitors were allowed to climb the scaffolding to the top, for great views across the nave of the church with the Roman lighthouse on the left and the castle on the right.
