We also visited this modernist church during Open House Perth last weekend. It is St Denis in the suburb of Joondana, which was designed by Ernest Rossen and built in 1967. The unusual design was inspired by the innovative Chapel du Ronchamp in France, designed by LeCorbusier.
The curved roof in St Denis gives the nave an unusual atmosphere, quite unlike traditional churches. The lighting is all natural and comes in through hidden windows. Many of the fixtures, including the pulpit and baptismal font, are made of concrete. And somehow it all coheres into an interesting and successful rethink of church architecture.
