Year of the Rooster

Happy New Year! 2017 is the year of the rooster in the Chinese animal zodiac. Or the year of the hen/cock/chicken – the Chinese character covers all of them. Of course, the year of the rooster doesn’t start until Chinese New Year on 28 January. Except in Japan, that is. Japan celebrates the new year on 1 January, so the year of the rooster has already started there. Hence the origami rooster, hen and chicken.

    • Hi russeljwood2015,

No, Japan uses the Western (Gregorian) calendar, the same as most countries in the world. China also uses the Western calendar for business and daily living, but uses the traditional lunar calendar for astrology and setting dates like Chinese New Year (which is on the first day of the first lunar month.
