Cathedral Town

The largest and most impressive building in St Albans is the cathedral, which was commenced in 1077, expanded and modified over the subsequent centuries and restored in the 19th century. Today the overall plan and many of the details like arches and windows are Norman.

The square central tower is especially notable, since it is the only surviving 11th century crossing tower in England. It looks very striking from inside.
